DYI Lodge Style Coasters

If you haven’t noticed yet, I like to dabble in a little bit of everything. I thought I would share this little project with y’all just in case you like to dabble too!
Where I live there are cherry trees and plum trees everywhere. So, for this project I used a piece of cherry wood for the holder and plum for the coasters.

First thing I did was find a round about the size I wanted the coasters and then found something a bit larger for the base. I made sure they were pretty dry. I knew if they were too green they would dry very quickly after being sliced so thin and possibly crack. With the plum I was able to cut it into 3/8″ pieces and it still felt durable enough for the task.

The base I wanted to be pretty heavy so I cut a 2″ chunk off of some Cherry that had some nice color to it. The hardest part was all the sanding. I suppose this could go a lot quicker if you had a good bench sander. I did all the sanding by hand and used a wire brush to clean the bark.

Now it was time to try my hand at a little whittling. I went out and looked for some sticks that could be easily whittled down to about 3/8 dia.

Then I put a coaster on the base and marked the spots that would be good for the uprights to hold the coasters in place. After drilling a 3/8″ hole half inch deep for each upright I glued them in place.

Now it is starting to look like something! Last thing I did was put a couple coats of tung oil on all of it. You could use bees wax too if you want to go a little more natural.

It makes a great gift! Have fun!

They are a wonderful gift and have lasted for a long time and still look like they did when I received them. No staining or splitting. I get so many compliments on them.
